Nutrient Deficiencies: Could They Be the Hidden Driver Behind Your Symptoms?

Underlying Driver #6: Nutrient Deficiencies
"But I eat a healthy diet........"
It's something I hear regularly when someone's blood tests reveal that one or more nutrients are lower than expected.
And it's an understandable reaction.
Yet eating nutritious food doesn't necessarily mean your body is getting everything it needs from it.
First, you have to digest it. Then you have to absorb it. And finally, your cells have to be able to use it.
That's why this week's Hidden Driver follows naturally from Driver #5 – Digestion & Gut Health.
If your digestion or absorption isn't working efficiently, nutrient levels may gradually decline—even when your diet looks relatively healthy.
And because nutrients are involved in almost every process in your body, deficiencies don't always produce one obvious symptom.
They can produce a collection of seemingly unrelated symptoms.

Your Symptoms Aren't Random
Nutrients are the raw materials your body needs to function. They help your body:
Produce cellular energy
Carry oxygen around your body
Make neurotransmitters (nerve messengers)
Support brain and nervous-system function
Maintain muscles and bones
Support immune function
Produce hormones
Repair and renew tissues
So, when levels become depleted, the effects can appear throughout your body. You might experience:
Fatigue
Exhaustion
Poor concentration or memory
Low mood or anxeity
Headaches
Dizziness
Muscle weakness or cramps
Pins and needles
Poor exercise tolerance
Hair loss
Changes to skin or nails
Frequent infections
Reduced ability to handle stress
Slow recovery
And this is why nutrient deficiencies can become particularly difficult to recognise.
Someone may have fatigue, low mood, hair loss and muscle weakness and assume they have four different problems.
They may actually be different clues pointing towards the same underlying driver.
It's Not Always About What You Eat
Of course, inadequate dietary intake can cause nutrient deficiencies. But it's only one part of the picture.
Your body must break food down before nutrients can be absorbed.
That means digestive problems can sometimes contribute to poor nutrient status.
Low stomach acid, impaired digestive function, intestinal inbalance or inflammation, diarrhoea, restricted diets and other problems affecting the gastrointestinal tract can all influence nutrient absorption.
Some medications can also affect particular nutrients.
This creates an important connection with my last Hidden Driver (digestion and gut):
Poor digestion → poorer nutrient absorption → nutrient depletion → symptoms elsewhere in your body.
And sometimes the digestive symptoms aren't particularly dramatic. That's why looking beyond diet alone can be so important.
Which Nutrients Matter Most?
There are dozens of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients essential for health, but there are several I pay particular attention to when someone presents with multiple unexplained symptoms.
Iron – oxygen and energy
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, which carries oxygen around the body – making it essential in cellular energy production.
Low levels can contribute to: fatigue, weakness, dizziness, headaches, breathlessness, poor concentration and reduced exercise tolerance, iron-induced anaemia.
Vitamin B12 – brain, nerves and blood cells
Vitamin B12 is essential for red blood-cell formation (and hence oxygen transport), DNA synthesis (cell repair and renewal) and normal nervous-system function.
Low levels may contribute to: fatigue, brain fog, poor memory, pins and needles, numbness, balance problems, other neurological symptoms, pernicious anaemia.
Folate – cell renewal and blood formation
Folate works closely with B12 and is particularly important for DNA synthesis, cell division and normal blood-cell production. Making it important for oxygen carrying as well as cell repair and renewal.
Low levels may contribute to fatigue, weakness and folate-deficiency anaemia (megaloblastic anaemia).
Vitamin D – bones, muscles and immunity
Vitamin D isn't simply a "bone vitamin." It has widespread effects throughout the body and is involved in normal muscle and immune function as well as maintaining bone health.
Low levels and contribute to musculoskeletal symptoms, poor general wellbeing, or repeated infections.
Magnesium – cellular energy and muscle function
Magnesium participates in hundreds of enzymatic reactions and is particularly important for normal energy metabolism, nerve signalling and muscle function.
Low levels may show up as a mixture of symptoms rather than one obvious problem. Low energy, muscle cramps and poor stress resilience are common symptoms.
Zinc – immunity, repair and digestion
Zinc supports normal immune function, wound healing, DNA synthesis and many enzyme systems, including digestion, metabolism and energy.
Low levels can contribute to digestive issues – such as stomach acid irregularities or other gut issues – frequent infections, slow wound healing and loss of taste or smell.
Why So Many Symptoms Appear Together
One reason nutrient deficiencies can be difficult to spot is that nutrients don't perform just one job. The same nutrient can be required by numerous tissues and biochemical pathways.
And deficiencies don't necessarily occur alone. For example:
Poor digestion → reduced nutrient absorption → fatigue and low mood; or
Low iron → reduced oxygen delivery → fatigue, headaches and reduced exercise tolerance; or
Low B12 → impaired nervous-system function → poor concentration, pins and needles and balance problems; or
Restricted diet → reduced intake of several nutrients → multiple symptoms developing together.
The symptoms can look disconnected. But often they may not be.
Evidence Snapshot
Research shows that nutrient deficiencies can affect many different areas of health¹⁻³
Energy and mental performance – nutrients including iron, B vitamins, magnesium and zinc are involved in energy production, oxygen transport and brain function. Inadequate status may contribute to fatigue, brain fog and reduced concentration.
Muscle and physical function – vitamin D is important for normal muscle function, with deficiency associated with impaired muscle function; correcting deficiency may improve strength in deficient adults.
Multiple symptoms can occur together – because micronutrients participate in interconnected processes throughout the brain, muscles, blood and cellular energy systems, inadequate nutrient status may show up as a collection of apparently unrelated symptoms rather than one obvious problem.
This is also why taking supplements simply because you feel tired isn't necessarily the answer.
Understanding whether a deficiency actually exists—and why it has developed—is much more useful.
The Bigger Picture
Nutrient deficiencies rarely exist in isolation.
They can be influenced by many of the Hidden Drivers we've already explored.
Stress can affect appetite and food choices
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance can affect how nutrients are transported around the body and used by cells
Blood sugar imbalance can change the foods we reach for
Poor sleep can influence dietary behaviour
Poor digestion and gut health can impair nutrient absorption.
And nutrient deficiencies themselves can then affect energy, cognition, immunity and recovery.
This is where the Hidden Drivers begin to overlap.
One driver can contribute to another.
That's why looking at the whole picture matters.
One Small Step…
This week, look at how many different colours of whole foods you're eating across the day.
Try adding one additional colour to one of your meals—perhaps berries at breakfast, leafy greens at lunch or another brightly coloured vegetable with dinner.
Different foods provide different combinations of vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients.
You don't need to redesign your entire diet.
Start by increasing variety.
Small changes, repeated consistently, can have a meaningful impact over time.
Connecting the Dots
If you're living with fatigue, poor concentration, weakness, dizziness, frequent infections, musculoskeletal issues or simply feeling as though your body isn't functioning as well as it should...
Ask yourself: Could I be missing something nutritionally?
And perhaps equally importantly: Am I actually absorbing what I'm eating?
Nutrient deficiencies may not be the only hidden driver—but they could be an important piece of the puzzle.
Your symptoms aren't random... they're clues. The key is learning how to connect the dots.
