“I just don't feel like myself anymore.”


Your energy isn't what it was. You're not sleeping as well. Your mood has changed. Perhaps you're gaining weight more easily, struggling to concentrate, feeling less resilient to stress or noticing changes in your libido.


For women, periods may change or hot flushes and night sweats may appear. For men, changes can be quieter — perhaps reduced energy, motivation, muscle strength or sexual function.


It can be easy to put these changes down to getting older, being stressed or simply having too much going on.


But sometimes hormones may be another part of the picture.



Your Symptoms Aren't Random


We often associate hormones with periods, pregnancy and menopause. But everyone has hormones, and they influence far more than reproductive health.


Hormones are essentially chemical messengers, helping coordinate everything from your energy and metabolism to your sleep, appetite, stress response, blood sugar, mood and sexual function.


So, when hormonal patterns change, you may notice symptoms in several seemingly unrelated areas:


  • Changes in energy

  • Poor sleep

  • Weight gain or changes in body composition

  • Mood changes or irritability

  • Reduced resilience to stress

  • Difficulty concentrating

  • Changes in libido

  • Loss of muscle strength

  • Headaches

  • Feeling unusually hot or cold

  • Changes in periods, hot flushes or night sweats

  • Changes in sexual function


And this is where hormones become particularly interesting. They don't operate in isolation.


Stress, Sleep, Blood Sugar...and Hormones


Imagine someone in their forties or fifties with a demanding job.


They're working long hours, sleeping badly, grabbing food when they can and relying on caffeine to get through the afternoon. Over time, they notice they're more tired, gaining weight around the middle, sleeping even less well and feeling increasingly stressed. Perhaps their motivation or libido has changed too.


It would be easy to see these as separate consequences of a busy life. But several of the systems we've already explored in this series are interacting here.


  • Stress involves hormonal signalling

  • Blood sugar is hormonally regulated

  • Sleep and your body clock influence hormone patterns

  • Changes in body composition and metabolic health can themselves interact with hormonal function.


The same principle applies during periods of natural hormonal change.


For women, changing oestrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can influence sleep, temperature regulation, mood, joints and sexual function.


For men, testosterone tends to decline gradually with age, although age is only part of the picture. Body weight, metabolic health, sleep and other health conditions can also influence testosterone levels.


So rather than assuming every symptom is “just stress,” “just menopause” or “just getting older,” it can be worth looking at what else is happening.


Why So Many Symptoms Can Appear Together


Hormones communicate with tissues throughout your body. That's why hormonal changes don't necessarily produce one obvious hormonal symptom. For example:


  • Thyroid hormones - Changes in thyroid function can show up through energy, body temperature, bowel habits, heart rate, mood, skin, hair and weight.

  • Cortisol - It's an essential hormone that helps us respond to challenges and follows a natural daily rhythm. But chronic stress and disrupted sleep can alter the wider systems involved in our stress response.

  • Sex hormones - These include oestrogen, progesterone and testosterone — which influence not only reproduction and sexual function but also areas such as bone, muscle, metabolism and the brain.


The important point isn't to try to diagnose which hormone is responsible for which symptom.


It's to recognise that hormones are another way apparently unrelated symptoms can sometimes be connected.

Research shows just how closely hormonal health is connected with other aspects of our health:¹⁻³


  • Metabolic health – in men with obesity, weight loss has been associated with increases in testosterone, highlighting the close relationship between body composition, metabolism and male hormonal health.¹

  • Hormonal transitions – changing oestrogen and progesterone during perimenopause can contribute to sleep disturbance and symptoms extending beyond reproductive health.²

  • Sleep and stress – poor sleep can influence the hormonal systems involved in our stress response, including cortisol regulation.³


The bigger message is simple: Your hormones don't work in isolation.

This week, introduce a little more regularity into your day.


Choose one meal and try to eat it at roughly the same time each day.


It doesn't need to be exact.


Our metabolism, hormones and body clock are closely connected, and establishing more consistent daily rhythms is one simple place to start.


Small changes, repeated consistently, can make a meaningful difference.


Connecting the Dots


Changes in energy, sleep, mood, weight, stress resilience or sexual function can easily be dismissed as separate problems — or simply part of getting older.


Sometimes they are. But sometimes they're clues that several systems are interacting.


And hormonal health may be one part of that picture.
