Introducing The Energy Map: A Different Way to Think About Health and Ageing

Health, to me, has always been about multiple influences impacting your body — never just one thing. Nutrition and lifestyle have been a big part of how I help people improve their health, and they will continue to be. But what has always fascinated me is the bigger picture: how different aspects of our lives interact, and how changing something in one area can have consequences elsewhere.

That way of thinking has shaped much of my clinical work, particularly with people experiencing multiple symptoms that don't fit neatly into one explanation. Until now, much of that work has inevitably focused on managing existing health problems. But my real interest has always been in prevention. How can we stay as healthy as possible, for as long as possible, so that we can continue to fully engage in our lives?

This is where healthspan rather than simply lifespan becomes important. It isn't just about how long we live, but how well we live — and that brings me into the rapidly developing field of longevity science and the question of how well we can age.

But healthy ageing doesn't begin later in life. Our ageing trajectory starts before we are even born, from preconception and our development in the womb, and continues throughout our lives. Along the way, we are continually responding and adapting to our environment and experiences. Those responses can change our internal environment, which in turn influences how we respond to what comes next. It is a dynamic, continuous feedback system.

And importantly, that trajectory isn't necessarily fixed. There are things we can do throughout our lives that may influence the direction in which our health is travelling.

My bigger vision is to help transform how people think about health. I want to move the conversation away from waiting until something goes wrong before we start looking after ourselves, and towards taking an active role in our health throughout life — building the resilience and capacity to cope with the challenges life inevitably brings while remaining as healthy, energetic and vibrant as possible.

The Energy Map has grown out of that thinking. It brings these different influences together into a simple framework for understanding how we continually respond and adapt to the world around us, and how that process may influence our health, resilience and the way we age.

The Energy Map by Boundless Energy – a health and longevity framework showing how environmental input, individual interpretation, communication and adaptation influence resilience and our health and ageing trajectory, with energy at the centre of the process.

How The Energy Map works

The Energy Map is a simple way of showing a process that is happening throughout our lives. We are continually receiving information from our environment, interpreting it through our own individual biology and life experience, and communicating that information throughout the body. Our body then adapts in response, with our ability to recover and recalibrate helping to determine our resilience and, over time, the direction of our health.

The Map breaks this down into five interconnected stages:

  • Environmental Input — everything from nutrition, movement, light and microbes to stress, relationships and our physical and social environment.

  • Interpretation — how our individual biology and previous life experiences influence the way we respond to those inputs. Our genetics, health, age, previous exposures, conditioning and beliefs can all play a part.

  • Communication — the many ways information is passed around the body, including through our nervous, hormonal, immune, metabolic and microbial systems.

  • Adaptation — the changes our body makes in response to the information it receives. These adaptations can help us deal with immediate challenges, but problems can arise when responses become prolonged or we don't have sufficient opportunity or resources to recover.

  • Resilience & Trajectory — our capacity to recover, repair and adapt to future challenges, and how that contributes to the direction our health takes over time.

At the centre of the Map is ENERGY, because energy is required for every biological process, including our ability to respond, adapt, repair and recover.

Around the outside is our Life Course and Ageing Trajectory, recognising that this process is continually unfolding from before birth through to later life.

Most importantly, the Map is a continuous feedback system. Each response can change our internal environment, which then becomes part of the context for whatever happens next. Over time, these repeated cycles can influence both our resilience and how well we age.

A Different Way To Think About Health

The Energy Map isn't intended to make health more complicated. In fact, its purpose is the opposite. It gives us a way to make sense of why so many apparently different aspects of health are connected.

Over the coming weeks, I'm going to take one part of the Map at a time and explore some of the many influences that sit within it. We'll start next week with Environmental Input, before moving through Interpretation, Communication, Adaptation, Resilience & Trajectory, Energy and the Life Course. Then we'll begin the cycle again, exploring different topics and gradually building a much bigger picture.

Some of these areas are already well understood, while others are emerging fields of research that I want to investigate further. The aim isn't to provide another list of health rules, but to explore the connections and help us understand how the choices we make, the environments we live in and the experiences we have can influence our biology throughout life.

Because the more we understand those connections, the more opportunity we have to influence the direction of our health before something goes wrong.
