"But I don't feel inflamed..."
When we hear the word inflammation, we often think of something obvious – a swollen ankle, an infected cut or pain after an injury. But inflammation isn't always something you can see or feel.
Your immune system uses inflammation as part of its normal defence and repair system. When you're injured or fighting an infection, inflammatory signals help your body respond to the problem and begin the healing process.
Usually, that response settles once it's done its job. But sometimes inflammation can become low-grade and persistent.
And because inflammatory signals can influence many different systems throughout your body, the effects may show up in ways that don't immediately seem connected.
If you're experiencing several ongoing symptoms, chronic inflammation may be one of the hidden drivers worth considering.

Your Symptoms Aren't Random
Inflammation isn't necessarily a bad thing. In fact, we need it. Acute inflammation helps your body fight infection, repair damaged tissue and respond to injury.
The problem arises when inflammatory activity continues for longer than it needs to. Instead of being a short-term response that switches on and then off again, the immune system can remain persistently activated at a lower level.
Over time, this may contribute to symptoms such as:
Persistent fatigue
Aching muscles or joints
Headaches
Poor concentration
Digestive symptoms
Skin problems
Reduced exercise recovery
Changes in mood
Feeling generally "run-down"
Increased sensitivity to stress
None of these symptoms automatically means you have chronic inflammation. But when several occur together, it's worth looking at the bigger picture.
Inflammation Is Part of Your Body's Repair System
Think of inflammation as part of your body's emergency response team.
Something happens – an infection, injury or other threat – and your immune system responds. Immune cells release chemical messengers that help coordinate defence and repair. Once the threat has passed, the inflammatory response should begin to resolve, and your body returns towards balance.
But problems can arise when the signals that keep triggering inflammation don't disappear.
Long-term stress, poor sleep, blood sugar imbalance, excess body fat, smoking, sedentary behaviour, certain dietary patterns, chronic infection and some health conditions can all contribute to ongoing inflammatory activity.
This is where inflammation starts to become less about healing and more about an ongoing burden on the body.
Why So Many Symptoms Appear Together
One of the reasons “chronic inflammation” is such an important Hidden Driver is that inflammatory signalling isn't confined to one part of the body. It interacts with your immune system, brain, muscles, digestive system, metabolism and cardiovascular system.
This can create patterns such as:
Poor sleep → increased inflammatory signalling → fatigue → reduced activity → poorer sleep
Blood sugar imbalance → metabolic stress → inflammation → poorer blood sugar regulation
·Gut disruption → altered immune signalling → inflammation → further digestive disturbance
Once again, what initially looks like several separate problems may actually involve interconnected biological processes.
Inflammation Also Uses Energy
There's another important piece of the picture. Running an immune response requires energy.
When your immune system is activated, resources are directed towards defence and repair. That's extremely useful when you're fighting an infection or recovering from an injury. But persistent immune activation can place a very different demand on the body.
This may be one reason why fatigue and reduced physical capacity can accompany prolonged inflammatory states. And it brings us back to the theme running through this entire series:
Your body needs energy to do everything.
Repair
Immunity
Digestion
Movement
Thinking
Recovery
When several systems are competing for those resources, you may begin to feel the effects.

Research increasingly shows that everyday diet and lifestyle factors can influence inflammatory activity:¹⁻³
Dietary pattern matters – Mediterranean-style diets rich in vegetables, fruit, wholegrains, legumes, nuts and other minimally processed foods have been associated with reductions in several inflammatory markers.
Colourful plant foods may have a particular role – anthocyanins, found in many blue, purple and deep-red foods, have been shown in randomised trials to reduce several markers associated with systemic inflammation.
Movement matters too – regular exercise is associated with reductions in important markers of chronic systemic inflammation, including CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α.
The bigger message isn't that there is one magical "anti-inflammatory" food, supplement or exercise. It's that our everyday habits can influence the environment in which inflammation develops and resolves.
The Bigger Picture
This is where our Hidden Drivers really start connecting. Look at what we've covered so far:
Emotional stress - can influence inflammatory signalling.
Dehydration and electrolyte imbalance - can place additional physiological stress on your body.
Blood sugar imbalance - can contribute to metabolic stress.
Poor sleep - can affect immune and inflammatory regulation.
Poor digestion and gut health - can influence the interaction between your gut and immune system.
Nutrient deficiencies - may affect normal immune function, antioxidant protection and tissue repair.
And now we arrive at chronic inflammation.
For some people, addressing those earlier foundations may already help reduce some of the factors contributing to inflammatory activity. For others, persistent inflammation may be a sign that we need to start looking deeper.
That's exactly why the order of these Hidden Drivers matters.
One Small Step…
Last time, we looked at increasing the variety of colours on your plate to help broaden your nutrient intake. This week, let's build on that.
Try adding one blue, purple or deep-red plant food to your day.
Think............Blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, cherries, red grapes, purple cabbage, beetroot or aubergine.
Many of these colourful foods contain plant compounds called anthocyanins, part of the wider polyphenol family.
Research suggests that dietary anthocyanins may help support a healthier inflammatory response, with a systematic review and meta-analysis of 32 randomised controlled trials reporting reductions in several inflammatory markers, including CRP, IL-6 and TNF-α.³
You don't need huge quantities or expensive "superfoods". A handful of berries with breakfast, some purple cabbage with lunch or a portion of beetroot with dinner is a simple place to start.
Small changes, repeated consistently, can make a meaningful difference.
