The Whole Energy Picture

I've just finished writing ten blogs on the Hidden Drivers of health. They covered very different subjects – emotional stress, hydration, blood sugar, sleep, digestion, nutrients, inflammation, immunity, hormones and environmental exposure.

But writing them one after another reinforced something that I have repeatedly observed throughout my years working in nutrition and health: we separate health into neat little boxes far more easily than our bodies do.

Poor sleep doesn't stay in the sleep box. Stress doesn't just affect how stressed we feel. Digestion influences the nutrients we have available to use. Hormones interact with sleep, stress and metabolism. Our immune system, gut, brain and nervous system are constantly communicating with one another.

They overlap. And ultimately, they all depend on something very fundamental: ENERGY.

That's where I'm taking Boundless Energy next.

The Whole Energy Picture – exploring how energy, resilience and healthy ageing are connected, and the new direction for Boundless Energy.

Why Boundless Energy?

I chose the name Boundless Energy when I first launched my business because energy has always been part of who I am.

I was a hyperactive child and channelled all that energy into sport. I loved competing and eventually became a competitive runner. I was always doing something and, as anyone who knows me will probably recognise, I've always had a certain amount of natural fizz!

But somewhere along the way, life starts to take its toll. I began to notice that my energy could be drained much more easily and that I didn't always bounce back in quite the way I once did.

I think many of us recognise that as we move through life. We put it down to getting older, being busy, having too much to do, not sleeping enough, going through a stressful period or simply having lost some of the energy we had when we were younger.

But I've never really been satisfied with accepting that losing our energy and vitality is simply inevitable.

When I called my business Boundless Energy, I already believed that energy was fundamental to our health, wellbeing and our ability to live the lives we want to live. I wanted to understand everything I could about it, both professionally and personally.

And, to be honest, I want to preserve my natural fizz and bounce for as long as possible.

Energy Is About More Than Feeling Energetic

The more I've learnt over the years, the more I've come to see energy as being about far more than whether we feel tired or energetic on any particular day.

Our bodies need energy for everything they do. We need it to think, move, digest food, respond to an infection, repair tissues, regulate our body systems and recover from the demands we place upon ourselves every day.

Some of those demands are obvious. Others are happening quietly in the background.

That was one of the threads running through my Hidden Driver Series. Stress, poor sleep, inflammation, immune activity, nutrient deficiencies and environmental exposures may look like very different issues, but each can influence the demands being placed on your body and its ability to respond.

That has made me increasingly interested not only in what might be going wrong, but in something much broader: what helps us maintain the capacity to function well, adapt to life's demands and recover afterwards?

For me, that's where energy and resilience start to come together.

Looking Beyond Symptoms

Much of my work over the years has involved helping people understand their symptoms. I still believe symptoms can provide incredibly useful clues about what's happening in the body, and that isn't going to change.

But as I evolve, so does Boundless Energy.

I'm becoming increasingly interested in looking beyond symptoms alone and thinking more about the health and resilience we're building underneath them.

We all know people who seem able to bounce back remarkably quickly from whatever life throws at them, while someone else may find the same experience takes much more out of them. There are countless reasons for those differences, and I don't believe we'll ever reduce them to one biomarker, one supplement or the latest health hack.

It's that capacity to respond, adapt and recover that I want to understand better. And that naturally leads me towards another area that increasingly fascinates me: how we age.

Energy for Today – and for the Future

Healthy ageing isn't about trying not to get old and chasing every new longevity intervention that promises to add years to our lives.

For me, it’s more about how we can continue to live well as we get older.

How do we preserve our strength, energy, mobility and independence? How do we maintain a healthy brain and body? How do we continue to recover from life's inevitable challenges? And how do the things we're doing in our 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s influence the way we're likely to feel later?

Muscle, metabolic health, cardiovascular fitness, nutrition, sleep, immune health, stress and recovery don't suddenly become relevant when we reach “old age”. We're shaping them throughout our lives.

That's the aspect of longevity I'm interested in. Not simply how long we live, but how well we live for as long as possible.

And I believe energy sits right at the heart of that.

A New Chapter for Boundless Energy

The Hidden Driver Series has been about identifying some of the common factors that can affect our energy, disrupt health and contribute to seemingly unrelated symptoms. I'm not leaving those ideas behind. I'm pulling them together.

Over the coming months, I'm going to explore energy from many different angles – including nutrition, metabolism, mitochondria, muscle, immunity, stress, recovery and resilience – and how those different pieces influence both the way we function now and the way we age. I'll also be taking a closer look at some of the ideas attracting attention in the longevity world and considering what's genuinely useful and what may be more hype than substance.

There'll be more science in the blogs to come. But before I get into any of that, I wanted to explain why I'm changing direction and why this subject matters so much to me.

In many ways, it isn't really a change of direction at all. It's taking the idea that gave Boundless Energy its name and following it much further.

I want to keep my fizz and bounce for as long as I possibly can. And I'd like to help other people do the same.
