The Electrical Body: Harnessing Bioelectricity for Health and Healing
Our bodies are not just flesh and bones; they are complex systems teeming with electrical activity. This bioelectricity is a crucial aspect of our biology, playing a vital role in everything from heartbeat regulation to cellular communication. Many people are unaware of the electrical component of their bodies and think in terms of chemical functions. Understanding the electrical nature of our bodies can offer new insights into health, healing, and overall well-being. This blog seeks to introduce you to the electrical nature of your body.
The Basics of Bioelectricity
Bioelectricity refers to the electrical currents and potentials that occur within our bodies. These electrical signals are primarily generated by the movement of ions (charged minerals) such as sodium, potassium, and calcium across cell membranes. Your nervous system is a combination of elecrical and chemical signals. Nurones, or nerve cells, create and transmiit electrical impulses, allowing for rapid communication throughout the body.
Heartbeats and Brainwaves
The heart and brain are two organs where bioelectricity is most prominent and easily observed. The heart's rhythmic contractions are regulated by electrical impulses originating from the sinoatrial node, often referred to as the body's natural pacemaker. This electrical activity can be measured through an electrocardiogram (ECG), which provides crucial information about heart health.
Similarly, the brain's electrical activity, monitored through electroencephalography (EEG), reveals patterns associated with different states of consciousness, such as wakefulness, sleep, and various cognitive processes. These brainwaves are essential for understanding neurological health and diagnosing conditions like epilepsy.
Cellular Communication and Healing
Beyond the heart and brain, bioelectricity is fundamental to cellular communication and tissue repair. Cells use electrical signals to communicate with each other and coordinate actions such as muscle contractions and wound healing. For instance, when a tissue is damaged, electrical signals help direct the repair process by guiding the migration of cells to the injury site and promoting regeneration.
Therapeutic Applications
The medical field has harnessed the power of bioelectricity in various therapeutic applications. Pacemakers and defibrillators are life-saving devices that manage abnormal heart rhythms by delivering precise electrical pulses. Transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation (TENS) units provide pain relief by using low-voltage electrical currents to stimulate nerves.
Emerging research suggests that bioelectric signals can even influence stem cell behavior and tissue regeneration, opening new avenues for regenerative medicine. Techniques like bioelectrical signaling modulation are being explored to enhance healing and treat chronic conditions.
Nutritional Applications
Given that electrical signals are primarily generated by the movement of ions (charged minerals) such as sodium, potassium, and calcium across cell membranes, the use of foods or neurtraceuticals containing such minerals could be hiighly advantageous to improving the electrical balance of the body. These charged minerals involved in electrical activity are commonly known as electrolytes.
Electrolytes refer to certain minerals that when dissolved in water have a natural posiitive or negative electrical charge. They help your body regulate chemical reactions, maintian the balance between fluids inside and outside of your cells, as well as being involved in electrical conductivty. The main electrolytes are sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, chloride, phosphate and bicarbonate.
Natural Sources of Electrolytes
The electolyte minerals can be found in many foods, although they can be especially high in certain foods. Coconut water is nature's natural electrolyte, whilst pink Himalayan salt and celery salt contain all the electrolytes at low levels. Beware white salt! Almost all white salt now, inlcuding sea salt, is processed salt that has processed out all the other minerals except sodium. The electrolytes tend to work in pairs, so too much of one can impact another. Foods naturally high in electrolytes include citrus fruits, pineapple, celery, cucumber, bell peppers and carrots. Including more of these foods in your diet can help to improve the electrical function of your body.
Nutritional Supplement Sources of Electrolytes
There are many different electrolyte products on the market. However, one natural sourced supplement is often overlooked in this field - kelp! Kelp is from a seaweed that is naturally high in electrolytes, especially calcium and magnesium that tend to be low in Western diets and are very intrical to nervous system and electrical function. It's also high in iodine which is important for the function of the nervous system, brain and cognition - all of which have high electrical activity.
Kelp does have an affinity for attracting heavy metals, so it's important to source it from a good organic source that is free of impurities and pollutants. One such product that I would recommend is Cytoplan Organic Kelp. I can offer a 35% discount on this product with discount code: CYT 248875-35-10.

Other Applications
Beyond the scope of this blog are other practices that can help maintain electrical balance inlcuding grounding or earthing, as well as the impact of environmental pollutants on the body's electrical activitiy. These will addressed in a seperate blog.
